Japan is launching wooden satellites into orbit to tackle a growing environmental crisis - the aluminum particles released when traditional metal satellites burn up during re-entry. The world's first wooden satellite, LignoSat, made from magnolia wood and developed by Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry, was completed in May 2025 and launched to the International Space Station in September 2025.
